Saint Valentine’s Day 2008, Thursday 14 February
From 1946 to 1999, the year that he passed away, Raymond Peynet forged strong links with the town of Antibes, his great talent providing illustration for many cultural events and tourism-related documents and advertising, and the town rejoiced in his wonderful drawings and cartoons that regularly appeared in the French and international press over the decades.
The friendship was cemented in 1989 with the opening of a municipal museum displaying a large body of work that was donated to the town by the artist.
2008 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Raymond Peynet, and the event is to be celebrated at various times throughout the year;
On Saint Valentine’s Day on February 14, the traditional Open Day and distribution of roses is to be accompanied by a guided tour of the Peynet collection by the daughter of the artist, Annie Druet-Peynet.
From late April, special homage is to be paid to the artist by the town of Antibes by dedicating the entire museum space to his career.
There are two hundred works comprising original drawings, porcelain articles, dolls, jewellery, silk items, posters and illustrations from newspapers of the day in the exhibition which is on from late April to mid-November 2008.
A larger selection of articles is to be on sale in the museum shop during the events.
On 16 November 2008, the anniversary of the birth of Raymond Peynet, there is a lecture by Annie Druet-Peynet at the Maison des Associations to close the commemorations.
Cultural and educational events “The Lovers poem”
There is a workshop-tour of the Peynet collection for children, with poems on the theme of Valentine’s Day read during the workshop, followed by an art and writing workshop culminating in the production of a “drawing-poem”.
The free workshop is limited to 15 children from 6 to 13 years. Enrolments must be made in advance by telephone or at the reception desk at the museum.
