Summary

Jazz in Juan
Jazz music in the Pinède
11 to 19 july

Before the Grand Mass of 2010 to celebrate the half-century of the Festival, the organisers of “Jazz in Juan” have concocted a wonderful programme this year with homage paid to Sidney Bechet, the young soul scene evoked by Josse Stone and the appearance of legendary musicians, among them Keith Jarrett and Jeff Beck.

On the 50th anniversary of the death of the great saxophonist without whom Juan would not be Juan, homage is paid to Sidney Bechet on the opening night on 11 July, which brings together the French musical group “Bechet Memory All Stars” who played with him in the 1950s. A great line-up of golden oldies in the “Buena Vista” group are living proof that talent and enthusiasm are ageless. The next day, Charmaine Anita Neville sings funk and rhythm & blues music, followed by another living legend of New Orleans, pianist, singer and composer Allen Toussaint, whose contemporary work echoes the “Yes we can” mantra of the day.

Roy Hargrove, who has accompanied many great stars of the genre including Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins, demonstrates his genius on trumpet with Hip-Hop numbers, and guest MC Solar appears in the second part. After the evening of 14 July when new discovery TSF-Jazz takes the stage, a crazy night of guitar and bass follows on 15 July, then the sounds of the highly talented Jeff Beck with his eponymous guitar and inspired melody take over the stage at the Pinède, accompanied by cult bass players Stanley Clark and Marcus Miller with the new, young Victor Wooten. The obvious joyful rapport of the musicians provides glorious alchemy and stunning improvisation.

The husky voice and warm tones of Alice Russell and Joss Stone ring out on 16 July, and on the following night, 17 July, the scintillating Jamie Cullum and prodigious soul singer Eli “Paperboy” Reed with his Otis Redding style thrill their fans. The inimitable trio of Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, who dazzled audiences in Juan last year, take the stage on 18 July. The traditional Mass and Gospel Concert with Tonya Baker closes the festival with jubilant sound on 19 July.
