Summary

June 4 sees the launch of the 13th Sailboats of Antibes – Panerai Trophy, organised by Antibes Sailing Association with the participation of Antibes Yacht Club and Antibes Water sports Club. The Village has a new venue this year; it is to be installed on the brand new Saint Jaume cultural esplanade.

This magical event evokes many memories, fondly remembered in particular by the group of friends in Antibes who had the idea of organising a regatta in the bay of Antipolis. Little did any of them think at the first regatta in 1996 that the event would become a highlight in the yachting calendar and emblematic of Antibes Juan-les-Pins, a town whose destiny has been linked to the sea for over 2,500 years!

It is now 13 years since the glorious sailboats with their sleek lines and majestic silhouettes first sailed into Antibes to do battle off the coast along to Juan-les-Pins.

Magnificent sailboats
“The Sailboats of Antibes – Panerai Trophy launches the Mediterranean sailing season with the flotilla of Spirit of Tradition Yachts and Metric Class Yachts”, states Yann Joannon, one of the organisers.
This year, over 60 craft from around the world with some 400 to 500 crew of over 25 different nationalities are to compete. These tall ships are from 6 to 30 metres and a 6 to 25 man crew is needed to sail them. A selection of the most beautiful Yachts of the Epoch (built before 1945), Classic Yachts (built before 1975) and Metric Class Yachts (constructed and competing in the America’s Cup from 1958 to 1987) are attending, to compete in a spirit of fair play and camaraderie and to race against the stopwatch with the wind in their sails, to the great delight of spectators on shore, watching the regattas of legendary and majestic sailboats with joy and enchantment.
